3 Faithful and True who tears the heaven

58 Is the One seated on the great white throne the Father or the Son?

!      Is the One seated on the great white throne the Father or the Son?

Dan.7:9 I saw until thrones were placed, and one who was ancient of days sat: his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, [and] the wheels of it burning fire.

Dan.7:10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousands of thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

The Ancient of Days is the Father. Here, it must have been a being who was seen in a vision to express the glory of the Father. However, it is reminiscent of the Son who appeared to John in the book of Revelation.[1] Creatures cannot see the actual Father. Creatures can see the Son because the Son is in the flesh, but the Son is also the One who the creatures cannot see essentially.[2] How can a creature confined in space-time see God who transcends space-time! In Daniel's time, since the Son had not yet revealed Himself as a creature to the creation world, this was only a vision of a dream.

As the books are opened, this scene is reminiscent of the great white throne judgment.[3] If this scene really represents the great white throne judgment, then it will not be the Son who sits on the great white throne but it will be the Father. (If so, it may be an angel or something else representing the Father in place of the Father.)

Dan.7:13 I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, there came with the clouds of the sky one like a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Dan.7:14 There was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

The time when the One like the son of man comes with the clouds of the sky, will it be the 2nd coming of the Son or the great white throne judgment after the 1000-year kingdom? The One like the son of man is definitely the Son. Therefore, the Ancient of Days represents the Father. Given that the Father gives the Son dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, it is very likely to be the 2nd coming. Because after the great white throne judgment, the Son also submits to His Father, and the creation world, completed through the Son, is returned to the Father.[4] Therefore, I believe here that the 2nd coming of the Son is expressed as the Son coming to the Ancient of Days, that is, God the Father, and the Father gives the Son dominion, glory, and a kingdom, to establish the 1000-year reign of the Son.

I don't know how the Son's approach to the Father will proceed, since I believe that the Father is not in the creation world.[5] (Of course, there is no place where the Creator is not.[6] All creatures live and exist only with the life of the Creator.[7] The Creator is with the creatures in the creation world as the life of the creatures.[8] To say that the Father is not in the creation world means that He is not confined to the creation world, and that He does not reveal Himself to the creation world.[9]) Even if the Father is in the creation world and actually sits on the true throne, and the Son goes to the actual Father, there will be no significant difference in worshiping the Creator from the situation of the creatures.

Dan.7:21 I saw, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;

Dan.7:22 until the ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.

Bible says that the Ancient of Days, the Father, is coming. And judgment is given to the saints of the Most High, the One like a son of man, God the Son. The time when the kingdom of God is given to the saints as an inheritance is in the 1000-year kingdom.[10] The Son returns and establishes the 1000-year kingdom, and here it is expressed as the coming of the Father, the Ancient of Days.

The Father will not actually enter into the creation world before the Son completes it and presents it to the Father.[11] Then some Being who takes the name of the Father which is the highest name, will take the place of the Father who judges for the saints, and the Being is the Son. Therefore, when the Father, the Ancient of Days, pronounces judgment in favor of the saints here[12], it may mean that the Father entrusts the Son with judgment on the creatures that are under sin. And it may mean that the Son who inherits the Father's name and rules the creation world, executes judgment on the creatures under sin. The Son will establish the 1000-year kingdom and will entrust the kingdom to the saints after He imprisons Satan in the abyss.[13]

There is also a translation of this saying, ‘Judgment was given to the saints’, not ‘Judgment was pronounced in favor of the saints’.[14] If so, this could mean that judgment will be given to those who will sit on the throne when the 1000-year kingdom is established.[15] Or, this could mean that the saints will participate in the judgment of the LORD Jesus who will crush the armies of the beast and imprison Satan fraudswarms in the abyss.[16]

Rev.1:4 John, to the seven assemblies that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace, from God, who is and who was and who is to come; and from the seven Spirits who are before his throne;

The Father is the One who is and who was and who is to come.

Rev.1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty."

The Father is the One who is and who was and who is to come. The Father is the Alpha and the Omega.

Rev.21:5 He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." He said, "Write, for these words of God are faithful and true."

Rev.21:6 He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life.

The Father is the Alpha and the Omega.

Rev.22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

The LORD Jesus is also the Alpha and the Omega.[17]

Rev.4:8 The four living creatures, having each one of them six wings, are full of eyes around about and within. They have no rest day and night, saying, "Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come!"

Rev.4:9 When the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to him who sits on the throne, to him who lives forever and ever,

The Father is the One who is and who was and who is to come.

John5:22 For neither does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to the Son,

John5:23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him.

John5:27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

John5:28 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice,

John5:29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

The Son judges. In view of this, it is thought that the Son is the Lord of judgment on the great white throne, whether the Son judges directly or the Father judges through the Son. Since the Son judges only according to His Father's will, the Son's judgment is the same as the Father's judgment. The Father has given all judgment to His Son, so that all creatures may honor the Son.

In addition to death and Hades where confined death[18], those who are thrown into the lake of fire are fallen angels and the wicked who trample their neighbors.[19] The spirits of the saints are not discussed here.[20] Basically, angels are spirits[21] and humans are souls.[22] The saints will be resurrected with a spiritual body, but the wicked will be resurrected with a soulish body.[23] The souls of the wicked will be clothed with the soulish body and thrown into the lake of fire.[24] In other words, whether the wicked has a spirit or not[25], only the soul and the body of the wicked are thrown into the lake of fire.[26] But the wicked suffer for their evil deeds[27] even in this life.[28] (It may be argued that the wicked will be resurrected with a body other than the soulish body because they must be able to suffer the punishment of the lake of fire.)

God will vary the intensity of judgment according to the measure of evil deeds with their intentions. Creatures do not know everything.[29] If God inflicts extreme punishment on certain creatures at the judgment seat even though other creatures do not know the reason, creatures may misunderstand God's justice. That is why God judges the creatures based on their revealed evil deeds.[30] But even the motive of the heart that committed the evil deed will be included in the judgment.[31] According to the measure of the evil that each of us has committed[32], whether it is an angel[33] or an adam, God will reveal the heart of our hearts and judge us justly.[34]

If God is going to reveal the motives of the hearts anyway, the question may arise. 'Shouldn't God just judge the creatures according to the motives of their hearts, even if they have not committed any evil deeds?' But God will not judge those who have evil motives as if they developed them into evil deeds. God will judge only as much as they had evil motives. Even if a creature hated its neighbors, if it did not even commit murder, God would only judge the creature as much as it hated its neighbors.[35]

Evil motives revealed even in deeds and evil motives not revealed through deeds cannot be considered the same. Evil motives that are not revealed even in deeds are always because good motives have prevented them. If we wanted to kill, but we restrained our hearts and did not kill, then we should not be condemned for murder. Our deeds showed that the good motives of not killing were stronger than the evil motives of killing.

God will not disregard our good motives and judge us as if we had actually murdered, simply because we had evil motives to kill. Since the other creatures too would have expected that because we had good motives, even though we hated our neighbors but we didn't even kill them. However, if God judges the heart we have not revealed even through our deeds with the same weight as we have revealed through our deeds, the creatures may misunderstand God's justice. Although hate is like murder[36], even if we hate, if we suppress our hatred and do not develop it into murder, then God will not judge our hatred as a crime of murder. Because we had the will to resist hatred.[37]

It may have been that we did not kill because of our conscience, but simply because we were afraid of punishment, but God will not punish us as if we actually killed. However, if we did not kill because of our conscience, I guess the weight would be lighter than if we did not kill for fear of punishment. Still, as creatures that refused to obey the LORD Jesus to the end, we would not be able to survive any longer, so we would have to be burned in the lake of fire anyway.[38]

This means that there will be differences in punishment.[39] If there are serious sins and light sins[40], and the amount of sins is different, how can the righteous Creator punish all criminals equally?[41] If there is no difference in punishment, the possibility to sin remaining in the creatures is not extinguished[42], because there may be creatures who may misunderstand whether God is really just.[43] If such a creature is left as it is, someday it will surely sin, and in the end, it must be punished. To say that the Creator does not discriminate in punishment is, therefore, only to say that the Creator created creatures to be burned in the end. It is nothing more than saying that the Creator is not love. But because the Creator is love, He will surely judge righteously.[44]

We may be wondering, 'Wouldn't it have been better if God had not judged those who had already committed evil, but had previously judged those who would commit evil in the future?', 'If those creatures are creatures that will eventually disobey the LORD Jesus and do evil anyway, wouldn't it have been better to judge them in advance and burn them as soon as they were created?', 'Wouldn't it have been better if God had not created the creatures that would sin in the first place?'

Since God knows everything, He could have created only the creatures whose free will would eventually be perfected, and not the creatures that would be burned in the lake of fire anyway because of their sins. But if God had done so, God would have created the creation world as a world completely different from what it is today. In the creation world where the creatures learn God through experience[45] and decide whether to love God by their own will[46], like now, there is no way to love God or to have free will be perfected without any experience of realizing what God is like.[47]

In other words, in the creation world like now, it is impossible for a creature to be created with a perfect free will. If there is no creature to sin, how will the Creator make known His love to the creatures[48], and how can the creatures love the Creator without knowing the Creator's love?[49] If no one begins to sin and no one tries to deceive, who will sin?[50] If someone deceives and kills neighbor creatures, can it be said that he/she is a creature who was made with perfect free will? Would the Creator of love Himself cause His creatures to sin and be burned?[51]

In the creation world like now, the only way for the Creator to create creatures that do not sin from the beginning is to not give them free will. Or the Creator would have to create creatures in a completely different world known only to the Creator.

John5:30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.

The Son judges only according to His Father's will. The Son judged the creatures under sin through the cross. The Son condemned Satan fraudswarms by becoming the son of man, and by taking the cross.[52] He pronounced judgment against Satan. The Son will come again to execute judgment, imprisoning Satan in the abyss for 1000 years[53] and then later casting Satan into the lake of fire.

2Cor.5:9 Therefore also we make it our aim, whether at home or absent, to be well pleasing to him.

2Cor.5:10 For we must all be revealed before the judgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

This judgment of repaying the creatures according to what they have done in their bodies, whether good or evil, is thought to be the resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment. There will be no resurrection of judgment when the LORD Jesus comes again and establishes the 1000-year kingdom. There is only the 1st resurrection which is the better resurrection of life. Although the Son will come again to judge the wicked and imprison Satan in the abyss, He does not judge all the wicked who have been on the earth up to that point.[54] And imprisoning Satan in the abyss is also not punishing Satan, but only imprisoning him until the time of the punishment.[55]

Moreover, the judgment seat of Christ speaking to the saints here directly refers to the time when the saints who hear these words will be judged for good or evil. The 1st resurrection that the Son raises the saints after His coming back, is not a resurrection that the saints are raised to be judged whether good or evil, but a resurrection that are raised to be rewarded.[56] Therefore, I believe that the judgment seat of Christ who judges each creature for good or evil, is likely to mean the great white throne judgment which will bring about the resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment.[57]

Perhaps this judgment seat of Christ could mean both the 2nd coming of the LORD Jesus and the great white throne judgment. For the LORD Jesus will judge at His 2nd coming, and He will also judge on the great white throne.[58] At His 2nd coming, He rewards the saints[59], but at the great white throne, He casts the wicked into the lake of fire.[60] After all, it is the judgment executed by the LORD Jesus, so even at different times, it can be the same judgment seat of Christ.[61]

1Cor.15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

1Cor.15:23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then those who are Christ's, at his coming.

1Cor.15:24 Then the end comes, when he will deliver up the Kingdom to God, even the Father; when he will have abolished all rule and all authority and power.

First, the Son is resurrected, and then those who will participate in the 1st resurrection at His 2nd coming. Finally, after the 1000-year kingdom is over, there is the resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment, that is, the great white throne judgment.

The Son will judge sin and the creatures under sin through the great white throne judgment, and deliver up the creation world to His Father. Through the great white throne judgment, the Son will abolish all rule and all authority and power under sin, and deliver up the kingdom to His Father. Therefore, I believe that it is the Son who sits on the great white throne.

Rev.20:11 I saw a great white throne, and him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. There was found no place for them.

Rev.20:12 I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

In the KJV, it is translated as 'God' instead of the 'throne'. I don't know which word is written in the original bible. If 'Thehos' which is 'God' is the original word, there may be many views of the One who sits on the throne as the 'Father'. If 'thronos' which is 'throne' is the original word, there may be many views of the One who sits on the throne as the 'Son'. I view the One seated on the throne as the Son. For I see that the judgment which the Father has entrusted to the Son is not yet finished.[62]

Rom.2:16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

This day, when the Father judges the secrets of men by the Son, is very likely to refer to the great white throne judgment after the 1000-year kingdom.[63] When the Son returns to establish the 1000-year kingdom, not all people will be resurrected. Only those who will participate in the 1st resurrection[64], the better resurrection of life[65], will be resurrected or transformed. (Those whose faith has not been verified, such as the criminal who repented and died on the cross, will also be in paradise.[66] We do not discuss about them here.) All people will surely be judged according to their deeds, good or evil.[67] The time when all people will be resurrected and judged[68] is the great white throne judgment. Because the Father judges through His Son, and people are judged before the great white throne, it will be the Son who sits and judges on the great white throne.

1Cor.15:25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

1Cor.15:26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death.

Is.25:8 He has swallowed up death forever; and the Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the reproach of his people will he take away from off all the earth: for Yahweh has spoken it.

The LORD Jesus who has the keys of death and Hades[69], has determined to abolish all rule and all authority and power, and to throw even death into the lake of fire. It is said that He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet.[70] Therefore, until He abolishes the last enemy, death, into the lake of fire[71], the Son reigns as the King over the creation world. The Son will deliver up the kingdom to His Father only after He has thrown the creatures under sin into the lake of fire. Then, the great white throne judgment which throws sin and its slaves into the lake of fire, is before the Son delivers up the kingdom to His Father. Therefore, it is thought that it is the LORD Jesus who is seated on this great white throne. Then the LORD Jesus will come for the 3rd time after the 1000-year kingdom has passed since the 2nd coming. Also, the Son who sits on the great white throne and judges, is probably still being clothed with the spiritual body, the body of resurrection.

Based on the words of Dan 7:9[72] or a certain original version of Revelation 20:12[73], some may think that the One who sits on the great white throne is the Father. The Son sits with His Father on the Father's throne.[74] It may mean that the Son sits on the throne by inheriting the name of the Father placed on the throne.[75] Since the Son sits on the Father's throne in His Father's name, it may be that the Father and the Son are not recorded separately. No matter who is seated on the throne, it seems that there is no problem in loving God and loving our neighbors. I don't think it is an issue worth quarrel or dispute.

[1] Rev.1:13 And in the midst of the lampstands was one like a son of man, clothed with a robe reaching down to his feet, and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and his hair were white as white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished brass, as if it had been refined in a furnace. His voice was like the voice of many waters. He had seven stars in his right hand. Out of his mouth proceeded a sharp two-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining at its brightest.

[2] 1Tim.6:15 which in its own times he will show, who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and eternal power. Amen.

[3] Rev.20:12 I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and they opened books. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works.

[4] 1Cor.15:27 For, "He put all things in subjection under his feet." But when he says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that he is excepted who subjected all things to him. When all things have been subjected to him, then the Son will also himself be subjected to him who subjected all things to him, that God may be all in all.

[10] Rev.20:4 I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as didn't worship the beast nor his image, and didn't receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived, and reigned with Christ for the thousand years.

[11] 1Cor.15:26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death. For, "He put all things in subjection under his feet." But when he says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that he is excepted who subjected all things to him. [16] Rev.19:14 The armies which are in heaven followed him on white horses, clothed in white, pure, fine linen. Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword, that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with a rod of iron. [25] Eccles.3:19 For that which happens to the sons of men happens to animals. Even one thing happens to them. As the one dies, so the other dies. Yes, they have all one breath; and man has no advantage over the animals: for all is vanity. All go to one place. All are from the dust, and all turn to dust again. Who knows the spirit of man, whether it goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, whether it goes downward to the earth?"

You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. But put forth your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face."
